The Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics was founded by Professor Lin Yuanying (with grade 1 and class 2 health technology), domestic well-known therapist, pioneer of domestic radical operation for cervical cancer and one of the "two Lins" of the gynaecology and obstetrics in northern and southern China in the early 1950s. It is the first clinical, scientific research and training bases of gynaecology and obstetrics. With the great efforts of several generations of obstetricians and gynaecologists for half a century, the discipline now has become the key discipline of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Gestational Diabetes Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Shanghai Severe Pregnant and Lying-in Woman Rescue Center and Gynecology Endoscopy and Operation Training Base of the Ministry of Health. The Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics is the Vice Chairman Unit of Gynaecology and Obstetrics Branch of Chinese Medical Association, Vice Chairman Unit of Gynecological Oncology Branch of Chinese Medical Association, Vice Chairman Unit of Gynaecology and Obstetrics Branch of Shanghai Medical Association and Deputy Chief Unit of Gestational Diabetes Cooperative Group of Perinatology Branch of Chinese Medical Association. The change in the obstetrical and gynecological disease spectrum and the application of technology pushes the discipline to pays great attention to the occurrence regularity of gestational diabetes, research on gynecological oncology therapeutics and the application of minimally invasive technology. It is committed to formulating Shanghai Gestational Diabetes Diagnosis and Treatment Specification. it is the chief unit in charge of multiple center research on gynecological oncology standardized treatment of Shanghai Municipality. it completed the first laparoscopic sigmoid colon vaginoplasty, which won the Third Prize for Shanghai Medical Achievement. it is the first put forward and proved the strategy and technique of reserving ascending uterine artery in performing the radical transabdominal trachelectomy for early cervical cancer. its design of three surgical instruments won national patents. Over the decade, it has accumulated more than 2000 serum and tissue specimens of the patients with gynecologic cancer. At present, it is the largest domestic repository of liquid nitrogen for gynecologic cancer specimens .

With 206 open beds, it is composed of four sub-disciplines including maternal and infant medicine, gynecological oncology, urogynecology/pelvic floor reconstruction medicine, gynecologic endocrinology/family planning and their corresponding inpatient areas. Now it has 62 team members including 13 professors, 16 associate professors, 13 doctors and 16 masters. The Deputy Director of the gynecology and obstetrics Center is Wu Sufang and Xu Xianming. Xi Xiaowei is the Administrative Director of the Gynecological Oncology Department. Wu Sufang and Zhu Yaping are the Administrative Director of Gynecology Department of South and North branch respectively. Xu Xianming is the Administrative Director of the Obstetrics Department and Prenatal Diagnosis Center. Wu Yu is the Administrative Director of Reproductive Medicine Department.
